Saeco, with the help of Swiss-based designer Carlos Borer, presents a mean design for the new-age kitchen – the Etienne Louis espresso machine – where space-age science fiction and medieval relics meet in an almost dangerous combination.

This daring design sees the machine encased in a shell of polished aluminium and steel in the form of a spiked ball, and the resemblance to the lethal medieval weapon known as a mace is clear. While its fierce exterior may appear impenetrable, the upper half of the spiked sphere easily opens for the machine to be topped up with water.
